Idaho is home to numerous small towns. While some of these towns are near the hustle and bustle of the city, others in rural Idaho have a certain charm about them. These small rural towns are delightful in their own ways and have so much to offer, including locally owned shops, heavenly restaurants, and amazing views. While this isn’t a complete list, here are seven small towns in rural Idaho that showcase some of the charm found in the Gem State.
1. Grace
Grace is a small rural town in southern Idaho that many Idahoans don’t even know exists. It is home to approximately 1,000 residents and is near many hidden gems like the Niter Ice Cave and Black Canyon. After a visit to Grace, you'll see why this is one small town that is easy to love.
2. Dubois
Dubois is located in Clark County and has a population of just over 500. It was named after a prominent politician who became the state’s first U.S. Senator. While this town is certainly small, it still has much to offer and is near attractions like Spencer Opal Mine and Lidy Hot Springs.
3. Challis
Challis was established in the 1870s and became home to a large number of sheepherders. In fact, in the early 1900s, there were more sheep in the area than people in the entire Gem State. Challis has peak Western vibes that you’ll feel as you drive around this delightful rural town.
4. Kamiah
You will find Kamiah nestled in the Bitterroot Mountains and next to the Clearwater River. Approximately 1,300 people live in this area, and it is truly one enchanting mountain town. You will find a beautiful riverfront city park in Kamiah and the popular Hearthstone Restaurant and Bakery.
5. St. Maries
Located in northern Idaho is the delightful town of St. Maries. This town is near multiple rivers and lakes, making this an outdoor lover’s paradise. Inside the town, you’ll find unique places to visit like the Hughes House Museum, a small-town museum that teaches you all about this area throughout the years.
6. Almo
Almo is certainly the definition of rural Idaho. This town is small, with just over 150 residents, but it is certainly charming in every way. This town is near the entrance to City of Rocks National Reserve and features gems like Tracy General Store, a historic store that was built in the 1890s.
7. Mackay
Mackay is one small town that often gets overlooked due to its proximity to towns like Stanley and Salmon. This town sits at the base of Mt. Borah, the highest mountain peak in Idaho. This was once a mining town, and you’ll still see much of its history throughout the town today.
