With nearly perfect year-round weather and approximately 750 miles of captivating coastline, the Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the world’s best beaches. And while we love the state’s most famous stretches of sand as much as the next person, we love checking out underrated gems like this one. Tucked away on the southwestern shore of Oahu, this little-known spot has plenty to offer to both locals and tourists alike.
Welcome to White Plains Beach! Though certainly located off-the-beaten-path in Ewa Beach, locals and military families flock to this picturesque spot on the weekends for endless fun and relaxation.
White Plains was hidden from the public eye for many years as part of the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station but is now open to the public and worth a visit — especially if you’re anything like us and love checking out different beaches.
Though often considered a fairly average beach, White Plains is known for its above-average features — especially for military families who live on Oahu. Beach cottages, surfboards, snorkel gear, and stand up paddleboards can be rented by military families, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find other amenities here if you’re not military.
With plenty of room to spread out — especially during the weekdays — this beach park features lifeguards, showers, bathrooms, plenty of shady areas, a ton of picnic tables, and grills perfect for a BBQ.
Add in fine, white sand and shallow crystalline water, and you have an ideal spot for your next beach day. What more could you ask for?
The main draw of this beach, however, is its epic surfing conditions. Separate sectioned off areas for swimming and surfing divide the beach, and an offshore reef, as well as a flat ocean bottom and fairly shallow water, make this spot one of the island’s safest spots for surfing lessons. And bonus: it’s much less crowded than Waikiki!
Whether you want to try your hand at surfing for the first time or want to make a splash with the kids, White Plains is one of Oahu’s best-kept secrets.
