Walking up to the back door of a closed bakery after dark might not seem like a wise idea... unless you’re visiting the famous Kanemitsu Bakery, of course. Located on the small island of Molokai in Kaunakakai is one of the most charming culinary destinations you’ll ever visit. Part bakery, part cafe, part crazy, odd, amazing experience, a visit to this famous bakery is an absolute must on any trip to Molokai.
This simple, down-home bakery cafe dates back to 1922 and serves up some of the island’s best breakfast, lunch, pastries, and freshly baked bread.
Inside, Kanemitsu Bakery is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall, with mismatched seating, homey decor, and protable fans. But trust us, this spot is famous for a reason.
During the day, guests will find scrumptious Hawaiian breakfast favorites — from loco mocos and omelets to french toast and everything in between. And the pastries? Well, let’s just say you’ll be in carb heaven here. Papaya and butter cream breads are served alongside cinnamon rolls and doughnuts sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Add a cup of coffee and you’re set.
After dark, this humble bakery also offers the sleepy island’s only "nightlife." You see, a sign taped to the window of the shuttered storefront directs visitors to a poorly lit back alley off the main street where locals and tourists alike line up to purchase — and then devour — some of the most scrumptious hot bread you’ve ever tasted.
Described as a pillowy, the loaves are hot, doughy, and straight from the oven, then split open and slathered with jelly, cream cheese, butter, cinnamon, or sugar. You’ll be hooked even before you take a single bite — the aroma of this hot, freshly-baked bread can’t be beat. If only we could convey smells through a computer screen…
Utilizing only the freshest ingredients and priding themselves on their bread-making facilities as well as excellent attention to quality, this bread is, quite simply, irresistible.
Kanemitsu’s old family recipe has made visiting this empty alleyway after dark a tradition for more than eighty years. And well, only in Hawaii will you find a tradition quite this lovely.
Kanemitsu Bakery is located at 79 Ala Malama Ave., Kaunakakai, HI 96748, and is open Wednesday through Monday from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed on Tuesday. If all you want is hot bread, it is served every evening except Monday from 7:30 to 11 p.m., though the hours fluctuate. You can call them at 808.553.5855 for more information.
The Hawaiian Islands are home to countless incredible bakeries, including the iconic Leonard’s Bakery — an absolute must-visit!
