In western Wisconsin, the little town of Westby, pop. 2,200, celebrates its Scandinavian heritage in a delicious way. The town is named after the Norwegian word meaning "western town." It holds an annual Syttende Mai festival to celebrate the Norwegian holiday. But the tastiest way that Westby celebrates its Scandinavian roots can be found in Kvarnström's Bakery, a little backyard bakery that is a must-visit spot.
Here's why this little Scandinavian bakery just might be the state's best.
There are bakeries that are big and industrial and there are bakeries that are simply adorable. Kvarnström's Bakery is the latter, located in a building that was probably built as a carriage house. It has no intention of taking over the world - and why would it? It's perfect the way it is!
If you're looking for authentic, made-from-scratch Scandinavian delicacies, look no further. The treats here taste like they were made in a Scandinavian home kitchen - because they were!
The bakery typically sells scones, lefse, assorted cookies, Scandinavian almond bars, and often a Scandinavian speciality. They will also make custom orders of other Scandinavian treats if you contact the bakery in advance - they do a lot of bake-to-order business.
For example, they make authentic Scandinavian dala cookies (also known as Swedish pepparkakor). If you want to pick up some of these spicy little cookies, just call the bakery!
The bakery makes a wide variety of breads, buns, pies, coffeecakes, muffins, rolls, bars and cookies, including some wonderful Scandinavian almond cookies.
The rosettes are delicate and almost too perfect - just like the little bakery that makes them!
Kvarnström's Bakery items can be found in several businesses in the area, but if you have time, be sure to stop into this little backyard bakery and see what has just come out of the oven. Still hungry? Here are some more wonderful Wisconsin bakeries you should visit.
