Way up in Lake Superior, near Chequamegon Bay and Bayfield, Madeline Island might be the most well-known of the Apostle Islands. And just steps from the ferry landing right on the shore is Farmhouse Restaurant. This charming, quaint and delicious spot serves scratch-made, local, sustainable food "from our community for our community."
Among the many summer tourists and and tourist shops, Farmhouse is a gem of a find and worth the boat ride you have to take to get there.
As owner and executive chef Gip Matthews puts it, living on an island sort demands you use local ingredients. Farmhouse grows much of what they serve, but they also forage on the island, purchase from nearby farms and have a commitment to local, organic and sustainable practices.
The charming little spot just steps from the ferry landing is usually open 8 am to 3 pm in the summer, but also holds a wide variety of pop-up and evening meals. They closed for a week to end the season, but return with a Thursday dinner and Bingo as well as a Sunday brunch. You never quite know what you'll get here, but you know it will be amazing.

Don't be surprised when you sit down and there's a cribbage board on the table - this might be elevated dining, but it's still Wisconsin!
Plan to stop in for a simple eggs, hashbrowns and toast breakfast or treat yourself to a savory waffle or kimchi Rachel. Or remember you're "up north" with the green eggs and Hamms, pesto scrambled eggs served with a can of Hamms beer.
When you're done with your meal, you're just steps from the shore where you can take in stunning views, walk off your meal and catch the ferry back to the mainland.
