It's one of those spots that you dream about the rest of the year until you have a chance to visit again. If it's sweet and amazing, these folks serve it up. From candy and ice cream to their iconic wine bread, this place has something sweet and mouthwatering for everyone in your family. A stop here absolutely has to be on your bucket list.
Please note, The Candy Shoppe has permanently closed.
You'll know you've found this adorable little spot by the red and white striped awning and the delectable scents wafting out of the door as you approach. It's a small spot, tucked away so that you could easily just pass it on by, but I promise you definitely want to stop. There may be a line, but no worries; you can watch the action happening through the big picture window.
You never know what you might find in production when you stop by. It could be pies or chocolate or fudge or maybe their famous wine bread.
No matter what you love, these folks are making it up. It's truly amazing the delicious treats they make in this small kitchen. Fluffy pastries, pies you'll want to take home, chocolate truffles, dipped Oreos, fudge for days. All amazing, all just waiting for you to come and get it.
One of the specialties here is known as wine bread. It's a Croatian breakfast or dessert bread that's yeast-risen. It's stuffed with fruit and cream cheese and covered with a buttery glaze. There are more than a dozen flavor options made in this kitchen, but if you're looking for a specific flavor, call ahead and they can usually let you know when you can pick it up.
The name of the wine bread comes from the days before refrigeration, when fruit was fermented to preserve it. They use locally-sourced fruit and it's either fresh, in-season, or fresh-frozen from when it was in season.
In addition to the baked goods and chocolate, you'll find a wall full of salt water taffy featuring every flavor you can imagine and some you'd never even thought of. These bright treats are great to take with you and slip in your pocket for when the sweet tooth attacks later in the day. They're perfect for giving you a shot of sugar during a long day exploring Bayfield.
Your kids will be wide-eyed in wonder at the candy counter that's stocked with every type of commercial candy possible. There's current favorites and a few nostalgic choices and it's a bit like getting the keys to Wonkaland.
If none of those other options float your boat, there are also dozens of ice cream options here, perfect for cooling down on a hot summer day. You'll find mouthwatering waffle cones and everything you could want for a refreshing, cold treat.
No matter what you could possibly crave, The Candy Shoppe has you covered. You can't possibly sample all they have to offer in one visit. Go ahead and schedule a daily trip in on your summer schedule so you can partake in all the amazing things they have to offer. You will not regret it.
