Highway 29 passes right through the middle of the state, heading out of Green Bay and up through Wausau before crossing I-94 and ending up near River Falls. It's a pretty major cross-state highway and as you head west out of Wausau, you'll come across the little town of Curtiss. Next time you're passing through, you're going to want take a little time to pull over for a meal at Abbeyland truck stop. It looks like a typical truck stop from the outside, but inside is a restaurant experience you won’t soon forget.
Abbeyland is a name familiar to folks in this part of the state as a business that started making sausage, but has grown to encompass multiple different divisions employing more than 1,000 people. When they started their own trucking division, it only made sense to have their own fuel spot. Lucky for us, they don't keep it to themselves.
This is the kind of place you want to stop, as you can load up on snacks and all kinds of other goodies as well as sit down for a pretty amazing meal.
Truckers make this country run and that often means they spend countless hours on the road delivery goods. They miss holidays and time with their family, but Abbeyland makes sure they don't miss out on a hearty, filling meal.
But you can partake in the awesome, welcoming atmosphere of this spot, as well. This feels like a neighborhood cafe, where the regulars come for their morning coffee and the servers know most everyone by name. The food is delicious and filling and feels like the stuff your grandma used to make.
From giant breakfast plates with unique takes, like this sweet potato scramble to hearty steak meals, you'll find anything you could possibly be craving here.
This is Wisconsin, so of course they also serve an amazing fish fry that's quite popular.
Whether you stop for a quick burger or sandwich or settle in for a big, amazing meal, you will not be disappointed.
They even make up seasonal desserts and specials that will tempt you to order away from the menu. Nothing about the demeanor here says "truck stop."
So the next time you're up near Wausau, plan to stop in Curtiss and have one of the best meals in the most unlikely place you'll ever imagine.
