Leaving Milwaukee is never easy, but the hardest thing to walk away from is all of the incredible Milwaukee foods that just make you feel at home. You can take the Milwaukeean out of Milwaukee, but they'll always crave gooey fried cheese, custard (not ice cream), and a good ole' fish fry. As a Milwaukeean you may have to depart from Brew City, but you'll always come back for these 11 beloved foods.
1. Cheese Curds
If you ask a Milwaukeean what they miss most after they've left the city, there's an immediate reaction: cheese! It's so hard to find a good cheese curd elsewhere, and so easy to find it here that we're just spoiled. These gooey cheese curds are a staple in any Milwaukeean diet.
2. Frozen Custard
There is quite honestly no treat that makes a Milwaukeean more at home than frozen custard. From Kopp's, to Leon's, to Kitt's, and everything in between, we can't do without it. Ice cream just isn't the same.
3. Fish Frys
Fried fish can be found all over, but there's nothing like a Milwaukee fish fry. It's not even just the food, (though, we do it right), it's a Friday night ritual. Lakefront Brewery has the best fish fry every week, and it brings the community together. Fridays just aren't the same without it!
4. Culver's butterburgers.
The most beloved fast-food restaurant in Milwaukee is Culver's. It's the most convenient stop for all of your Wisconsin favorites, such as: cheese curds, frozen custard, and the famous butter burger. Nothing hits the spot like Culver's does.
5. Brats
It's not a hot dog...it's a brat, and people who aren't from Milwaukee just don't get it. Cookouts aren't the same without these sausages.
6. Bloody Marys, the Milwaukee way.
Bloody Marys are a whole meal here in Milwaukee. A Milwaukeean may go out for a bloody in a new town, but we're sure they'll leave hungry.
7. Oakland Gyros...gyros!
"OG's" as they call it is home to the best gyros in the Midwest! A poor displaced Milwaukeean will be found searching the streets for gyros after bar close, but will only find it back home in MKE at Oakland Gyros.
8. Soup Bros soup and bread.
Nothing says "home" like a warm bowl of soup, and no one does it better than Soup Bros. Their red pepper bisque is all you need in a home, and it's only in Milwaukee.
9. Ridiculously good tacos.
Milwaukee is full of authentic Mexican food. From La Casa de Alberto, to Botana's, to Gypsy Taco, you'll be craving tasty tacos and tostadas. Most Milwaukeeans even miss Tuesday nights at Bel Air, despite it not being authentic!
10. Glorioso's hot ham and rolls.
Nothing says Midwestern like hot ham and rolls! No Milwaukee Sunday is complete without stopping into Glorioso's Deli for the best hot ham and rolls special around. Sundays just aren't the same without it.
11. Cream Puffs
Though you can probably make your own, there's no better dessert like a Wisconsin State Fair cream puff. You will go into a sugar coma, without a doubt, and it's worth it every time.
