Pubs and bars aren't necessarily known for their food. Food is generally secondary at a pub, with more focus on drink specials and happy hour. But at Fat Patty's, you will find some of the best pub food around.
Fat Patty's was a pub and grill founded in Huntington in 2007, right next to the Marshall University campus, and across the street from the school's Joan C. Edwards football stadium.
Obviously, a pub is a fast draw on any college campus, and Fat Patty's became immediately popular, but not because of its drinks and cocktails. Although they have great weekly specials, the primary success for this restaurant is its food.
Early on, they had several food items on their menu that were big hits with the local crowd. Since then, the menu has expanded to a pretty sizable number of selections.
They now have over 20 specialty burgers, sandwiches and wraps on their menu. Their burgers are especially good: thick, juicy and flavorful beef patties with a large variety of toppings and seasonings, from the classic Patty Melt, to the garlic-heavy Vampire Killer. They also have steak dinners, chicken platters, fried seafood and desserts.
Now open in four locations, Fat Patty's was named one of the Top 50 Burger Joints in the country by USA Today, and frequently receives praise and high marks on Urban Spoon.
The menu has a fairly large number of starter that encompasses nearly an entire page of the menu. Selections include wings, potato skins, nachos, Bavarian pretzels, quesadillas, bacon cheddar fries, onion rings and chicken strips.
They also have a pretty impressive selection of salads (pictured below), many of which are meals onto themselves rather than starters before your main course (though they do have side salads, too). Additionally, appetizers are half price during happy hour, which is every day from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
Whether you are there for food or drink, or both - as most people are - the friendly staff are always there with a smile on their faces, even at the most hectic and busy times, which really rounds out the enjoyable experience of eating at Fat Patty's.
Like most pubs, they have many flat screen TVs and are especially busy for special events, such as sports games, New Year's, Superbowl Sunday and, of course, St. Patrick's Day. Even though the Huntington location is situated right next to the college, it brings in customers of all ages. Every night, the crowd is diverse.
Aside from its original location in Huntington, there are additional West Virginia locations in Barboursville and Teays Valley, with a fourth location in nearby Ashland, Kentucky.
So, no matter which Fat Patty's location you choose, you are sure to find great food, drinks and company every time.
