If you've never heard of Tonasket, you're not alone -- it's a small community nestled along the eastern bank of the Okanogan River best known for its annual autumn Barter Faire. But when it comes to amenities, it's about quality over quantity here. The city is home to a surprisingly modern co-op, especially when you consider the business is over 40 years old. Whether you're caving a deli sandwich or some fresh local produce, this place is worth the drive.
Tonasket is a tiny town in Okanogan County with a population of less than 1,200 people.
The co-op is one of only three markets in the area.
The Tonasket Natural Foods Co-op and the Barter Faire are actually connected and have been since the beginning.
Many people played integral roles in the development of both concepts, and the two organizations have grown and thrived because of it. The Barter Faire was developed in 1974 as a way to help families barter surplus harvest and goods before winter, and it's now a huge event. The co-op was developed to bring fresh, healthy food to the community.
The shelves are stocked with plenty of fruits, veggies, grains, and high quality natural foods.
You'll also find meat, frozen foods, herbs, spices, and beer and wine here.
In addition to the store, the co-op has a full service deli the locals love.
On any given afternoon, you'll find plenty of patrons relaxing in the deli over lunch.
The deli is open for lunch daily and serves delicious salads, piping hot soups, and a huge sandwich selection.
If you don't want to dine in, call ahead between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and arrange a pick-up time. You can grab your grub at the deli order window.
When you're done with your food shopping, check out the selection of unique gifts and household items the co-op always has on hand.
This is the closest you'll find to one stop shopping in such a small town.
The Tonasket Natural Foods Co-op is open seven days a week, although hours vary.
Monday - Friday hours are 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., and they're open from 11 a.m. - p.m. on Sundays. The deli window is always open from 11-2.
