Soup and bread, while delicious, aren't exactly the most fascinating food items in the world... unless, of course, you happen to be enjoying them at Soulful Soups and Spirits in Spokane. For over a decade, this tiny eatery has been a beloved local icon. And while their menu is simple, it has everything you need, right down to the perfect wine to pair with the soup of the day.
Soulful Soups & Spirits is located at 17 N Howard St. in downtown Spokane, where it has remained for over 17 years.
And for the better part of two decades, it has earned its reputation as Spokane's favorite lunch spot.
Inside, the space is small, but it feels cozy, intimate, and welcoming.
You order at the counter, then wait at your table for your delicious meal.
When R.J. Portmann and Julles Messmann bought the eatery in 2009, they added the 'spirits' part.
While the menu items and recipes remained the same, they decided they'd reopen the restaurant at night with more of a bar atmosphere. After 5 p.m., the evening menu comes out and the cocktail specials start.
Each day, you'll find at least five soups on the menu.
They're all fresh and homemade, and the Soulful crew creates about 20-30 different soups throughout the week.
And if you have a tough time deciding, you can always order a soup sampler with three different varieties.
The House Tomato Basil and the House Beer Cheese soups are always available, and they're exceptionally tasty.
And believe it or not, the soups aren't only thing the Soulful crew has perfected. Their beer bread is just as famous.
Every soup is served with freshly baked beer bread, and it's absolutely addictive.
Soup and bread might not seem like the most exciting meal, but it is here.
You'll just have to try it for yourself.
Soulful Soups and Spirits is open Monday - Saturday from 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.
In addition to being a delicious place to dine, Soulful also hosts open mic nights on Wednesdays, trivia on Thursdays, and occasional live music and events.
If you've never tried Soulful Soups and Spirits, stop in the next time you're in Spokane. It may be located downtown, but it's also a neighborhood gem.
