Burien is a small city that sits just south of Seattle. It's vibrant, creative, diverse, and overall underrated. it also happens to be home to the best ice cream shop in Washington, according to Travel and Leisure. If you've never been to Mezdo Gelato Bar & Travel Cafe, you're really missing out.
Mezdo Gelato Bar & Travel Cafe sits on 152nd Street in the historic neighborhood of Olde Burien.
The building is small and unassuming. But on a warm summer day, you'll recognize it by the line out the door.
Owners Jennifer and Fareed Al-Abboud met in Spokane in 2002 in a salsa dancing class.
They dreamed of creating delicious gelato from scratch, traveling to Italy twice to learn how to do just that. They even studied at Bologna’s Carpigiani Gelato University with a gelato maestro who had once been a pastry chef to the pope.
Medzo stands for Mediterranean Zone, an appropriate name for a travel themed cafe.
Gelato is definitely most prominent in Italy, although you'll find it all over Europe.
Gelato is denser than regular ice cream. And because it has less air whipped in, it tends to be perfectly creamy.
And Mezdo's gelato is unforgettable.
The rotating menu features exotic flavors of the Mediterranean region as well as some classic flavors.
The flavors vary based on what's available seasonally.
Although this place is obviously most popular in the summertime, it's (thankfully) open all year.
In the winter, affogato, espresso poured over gelato, is a best seller.
Although you'll have to get your gelato to-go, Mezdo Gelato Bar is currently open for pick-up orders.
Current hours are 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. daily. Check the company Facebook page for the daily flavors and, if possible, make your gelato selection before you arrive at the store.
