Staying at a haunted hotel would be scary. Traipsing through a haunted cemetery at night would be a little eerie. But eating at a haunted restaurant would be no big deal, right? Have a meal at Billy’s Bar & Grill in Aberdeen and you’re likely to find out.
Aside from being the birthplace of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Aberdeen has been a respite to those shopping to and from various ports of call for over a century. The upstairs part of Billy’s was formerly the union building for sailors arriving from the nearby port, and it’s safe to say things sometimes got a little rowdy.
The restaurant wasn’t named Billy’s until 1979, but it was a bar and grill long before that. Rumor has it that a man named Billy Gohl, the secretary of the sailor’s union, used to murder sailors after befriending them. Billy would shoot the sailors and push their bodies into the river running adjacent to where the building now stands. Eventually some mysterious arsons and robberies were also traced to Billy, who was eventually sent to prison for his crimes. He was only convicted of two murders, but he may be responsible for up to 100 deaths.
The ghost sightings here have been numerous. Employees and patrons have spotted a man, perhaps Billy himself, standing behind the bar with a cold expression on his face. Upstairs, apparitions of sailors and prostitutes have been seen, which implies that the rooms were used as a bordello.
Even if you don’t spot a full-on ghost, you may notice some suspicious activity while dining at Billy’s. Glasses have flown off tables and shelves for no reason, and patrons sometimes feel cold chills on their necks or walk through unexplainable cold spots.
On the upside, Billy’s does serve some delicious food. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, the atmosphere is relaxed and the service is friendly… except for the stern-faced bartender you may see standing behind the bar, who isn’t actually a bartender (or actually there) at all.
