If you've ever been lucky enough to visit Germany, you know their freshly baked pretzels and pastries are second to none. Luckily, you don't have to book an expensive flight to Bavaria to sink your teeth into a scrumptious slice of German Rye. Just head to Lakewood and visit Hess Bakery & Deli.
Hess Bakery & Deli got its start in 1963 and has been a local favorite ever since.
The business is owned by John and Joanie DeGrande, along with their co-owner, Dario Cardenas, otherwise known as Kiki.
Tony and Hilda Hess, the store’s original owners, immigrated from Germany and settled in the South Sound.
Tony was already a trained baker, and he got his start selling and delivering bread on Fort Lewis and McChord. Eventually, they were able to open up a storefront. Tony Hess passed away in 2006, and the family sold the business to John and Joanie DeGrande, who carry on the family's traditions.
Every single thing here is made from scratch following the authentic Hess family recipes.
The pretzel rolls are to die for. They also sell Westfalian Sourdough Rye, Pumpernickel Bread, and assorted German Broetchen.
The traditional German pretzels are simply amazing.
The traditional pretzels often sell out before the day is done, and it's easy to see why.
As if the bakery wasn't reason enough to love this place, Hess is also a full-service deli.
They offer the finest meats, cheeses, and salads, and the team can make you an outstanding sandwich.
Hess Bakery & Deli can also help you cater your next party.
Order a meat and cheese platter, pick up some freshly baked breads, and you'll have some seriously happy guests.
Did this put you in the mood for some freshly baked goodness? If you can't make it to Hess Bakery & Deli anytime soon, pay Poulsbo a visit when you can.
