We've got some extraordinary breweries here in Washington, and you don't have to be a beer lover to enjoy them (although it doesn't hurt). Tacoma's first craft brewery, Engine House No. 9, is located in a century-old firehouse -- and that's not the only thing that makes it great. Not only is the beer selection fantastic, but the food is exceptional.
Engine House No. 9 was built in 1907 to provide fire protection for Tacoma’s North End.
This was the last station in Tacoma to convert from horse-drawn to mechanized equipment, which happened in 1919.
In 1965, the firehouse was abandoned, and it started to deteriorate.
Luckily, it was restored by its current owners, and it now has a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
Win Anderson and Bob Lane purchased the firehouse and saved it from demolition, turning it into a neighborhood tavern.
A few decades (and owners) later, Tacoma’s first craft brewery was added to an adjoining building. While the original brewery has since expanded and moved downtown, you can still enjoy all the beer at Engine House No. 9, which serves as the taproom.
Come visit Engine House No. 9 and you can enjoy beer on tap or by the bottle, and there's something for every taste.
From pale ales and pilsners to hearty stouts, you'll be able to try a wide variety of brews.
But even if you're not a beer fan, you'll want to visit for the food.
They claim to serve the best burgers in Tacoma here, and they might actually be correct. You'll also find classic bar food, tacos, pasta, salads and sandwiches, and mac & cheese made from Beecher's Flagship Cheddar.
Even the kids' menu here is exceptional... and on Mondays, you can get one for $1.99 with the purchase of an adult entree.
And with names like the Rowdy Burger and Spotted Pupperoni Pizza, you might be tempted to order a kids' meal for yourself.
Engine House No. 9 also serves a weekend brunch, and it's definitely worth waking up for.
Everything is made from scratch, right down to the housemade granola.
Engine House No. 9 is open Monday - Friday from 11 a.m. - midnight.
On Saturdays, they're open from 8 a.m. - 2 a.m., and Sunday hours are 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.
Address: 611 N Pine Street, Tacoma, WA, 98406
