I'm prepared to make a claim that may surprise you: Washington has some of the best fried rice dishes you'll ever eat. Fried rice is a favorite meal across many countries and for good reason. Traditionally, fried rice was an invention of necessity. With skill and resourcefulness, cooks transformed day-old ingredients into a meal that's become one of the world's most beloved comfort foods. If I've piqued your interest, keep reading for a list of restaurants serving the best fried rice in Washington.
1. Rose Phở - Normandy Park
Our first stop on this fried rice journey takes us to Rose Phở, a small, family-owned restaurant in Normandy Park located just outside of Seatac.
Rose Phở's take on this classic comfort food is everything a diner would want their fried rice to be. Not to mention the restaurant's owner, Rose, is a local institution beloved for her kindness, humor, and hard work.
2. Loak Toung Thai - Tacoma
Loak Toung Thai is tucked in an eccentric building in central Tacoma. It specializes in Isaan-style Thai food, a regional cuisine with heavy influences from Cambodia and Laos.
It's pretty much impossible to find a dish that Maam, the chef and restaurant owner, doesn't execute to perfection. Still, the fried rice here has rich, savory flavors. It's sure to become your new favorite!
3. Ginza - Bellevue
Since 2002, Ginza has been serving the Old Bellevue area delicious Japanese meals.
One of their specialties is Japanese fried rice served in a pumpkin. Hearty and complex, this approach to fried rice is so delicious, it's habit-forming.
4. Reckless Noodle House and Cocktails - Seattle
What is there to say about Reckless Noodle? Tucked in the Leschi neighborhood, this joint has it all: great vibes, delicious cocktails, and you guessed it, unbeatable fried rice.
Cooked with pastrami, this fried rice is so good you'll have a duty to share it with your fellow eaters. But you won't want to. Word to the wise, as a Reckless Noodle enthusiast myself, this place is no hole-in-the-wall secret. Show up early to get on the waitlist. It's absolutely worth your time.
5. Tai Tung Restaurant - Seattle
Closing our list is Tai Tung Restaurant in Seattle's International District. There are many reasons you should visit Tai Tung. It's been owned by the same family since it first opened in 1935. If that wasn't enough, it was Bruce Lee's favorite restaurant!
With an extensive and mouth-watering menu, there's something for everyone at Tai Tung. The fried rice here represents the platonic ideal of what good Chinese fried rice should be. Plan a visit and explore one of the most vibrant and beautiful neighborhoods in Seattle while you're at it!
Now that we're all hungry, it's time to schedule your culinary tour. While no list is exhaustive, it's my biased opinion that you'll find the best fried rice in Washington at these restaurants. Add them to your bucket list of places to dine in the Evergreen State. You won't regret it.
