A New Jersey-style donut shop arrived in Charlottesville just a few months ago and it's taken the city by storm. This mid-sized town has no shortage of world-class bakeries; Cou Cou Rachou, Marie-Bette, Belle Bakery, Cake Bloom, and Albemarle Baking Company all have a well-earned place in our hearts. So you can imagine my intrigue when yet another place for baked treats opened up just a few miles away.
My toddler and I ventured to Sbrocco Donuts on a Saturday morning around 8:00 a.m. And this wasn't just any Saturday; it was a UVA game day. I had anticipated a crowd, but fortunately, the line moved fairly quickly. Sbrocco was started by Melissa Sbrocco, a baker who started working at Marie-Bette just a few years ago. She quickly realized her passion for baking and dreamed of opening her own place, one that focused on delicious, yeasty donuts.
Sbroccos is a relatively small storefront in the Fry's Spring neighborhood. When we stepped inside, I immediately noticed the colorful display of donuts. One of the employees kindly offered samples to everyone waiting in line, and that's when I was able to try the chocolate cake donut. It was sheer perfection. My toddler agreed.
When it was my time to order, I requested a vanilla bean and a cinnamon-sugar yeast donut. The yeast style is the specialty here, and the bakers employ a brioche recipe. Along with no-frill donuts, the bakery also offers crumb buns, apple fritters, and other seasonal treats.
Will I be back soon? Absolutely! My favorite was the chocolate cake donut, but I'd like to try the apple fritters or cinnamon rolls next time. Most people visiting took their bright pink box of donuts to go, but it was fun to sit up at the counter, facing the outside window, and enjoy our breakfast there. Pair your sweet treat with a coffee and you've got the makings of an excellent morning. After all, as stated on their website, "donuts make a well-rounded breakfast."
Sbrocco's is open between 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. every day. If you can, try to get there early, or your favorite might be sold out for the day! Curious to learn more? You can visit Sbrocco's online to peruse their coffee and donut menu.
