With such an extensive history, Virginia has the privilege of boasting plenty of firsts. But few realize that one of the most beloved treats was born here: the waffle cone. And better yet, the machine that produced this first sugary treat continues to make them today. A trip to Doumar’s Barbecue & Cones in Norfolk allows you to enjoy a homemade cone and some of the best barbecue in town in a unique, old-timey atmosphere.
Anyone who’s ever enjoyed the decadent waffle cone can thank Abe Doumar, the inventor of the waffle cone machine.
Doumar debuted this fantastic contraption at the St. Louis World Fair of 1904. Needless to say, it was an instant hit among crowds.
Abe brought the world’s first rolling ice cream cone machine back to his home in Norfolk, and the rest is history.
While the business was initially set up as a chain restaurant, a terrible storm devastated many of the outposts and caused the move to its current location of Granby Street. This has been the home of Doumar’s since 1933.
Today, folks of all ages line up at Doumar’s to taste this authentic waffle cone and enjoy the carhop atmosphere inside.
Visitors can enjoy ordering from their car, or walking into the restaurant and stepping back in time. In fact, on nice days folks can drive up to the diner and watch the waffle-cone making from the comfort of their own car.
In addition to delicious ice cream treats, the restaurant also serves up delicious barbecue, burgers, sandwiches, and pork rolls.
Once you step inside this friendly diner, you’ll understand why Doumar’s is an institution.
Photographed above is Albert Doumar, the kindhearted owner who was just as much an institution as the restaurant itself.
And not to mention the scent of homemade waffle cones that fills the whole space...
Chances are you'll be back for another scoop in no time!
