What's not to love about tacos? Whether prepared traditionally or creatively, they're delicious and almost always impossible to have just one of. And many people don't realize just how many incredible taco spots there are in Virginia, whether they be a food truck or a restaurant. If you're a taco lover, here are the places you should know about:
1. Pico Taqueria (Chincoteague)
Pico Taqueria is something of a hidden gem, although folks who live in Chincoteague Island have more likely than not frequented this taco haven. The exterior may be casual, but rest assured that the tacos have some serious flavor. You can look forward to trying unique kinds such as fried oysters and avocado crema.
2. Boka Tako Bar (Richmond)
If it's your first time visiting Boka, you can order something called a gauntlet which is a sampling of some of the finest tacos the restaurant has to offer. One of the specialty items here is the shrimp and grits taco. Photographed above are the fish taco and tofu Mexican taco. And if you happen to be looking for something else besides tacos, rest assured that the quesadillas are equally as amazing.
3. Brazos Tacos (Charlottesville)
There are plenty of taco joints to choose from in C-ville, and high-quality ones at that, but Brazos remains a local favorite. It's a casual, trendy atmosphere with a great patio. The fish tacos are especially delicious here.
4. Mano Taqueria (Lexington)
Mano Taqueria has been part of the Lexington dining scene for a relatively short while, but has definitely made a name for itself. The tacos here are made form locally-sourced ingredients, which makes the quality especially memorable. Slow roasted pork taco anyone?
5. Tacos El Primo (Harrisonburg)
Tacos El Primo is another case of an unsuspecting gem. This food truck cranks out flavorful and authentic dishes, especially in the taco department. Unique combinations such as spicy pork and pineapple will have you coming back for seconds.
6. Baja Bean Co. (Staunton)
Baja Bean Co. seems to be something of a crowd divider when it comes to the locals: people either adore it or go elsewhere for their taco needs. One thing is for sure, though, Baja Bean Co. has character and plenty of flavor. Photographed above are the fish tacos.
7. Gringo's Taqueria (Virginia Beach)
You know a spot's worth checking out if it usually has a line out the door. Don't be discouraged, though, because the wait isn't bad and the food is definitely worth your wait. This Virginia Beach spot takes the notion of locally-sourced to heart, as their seafood comes from the Eastern Shore. This is how Gringo's does their grilled fish tacos.
8. El Chilango (Arlington)
For authentic Mexican tacos, look no further than El Chilango in Arlington. These street-style tacos are a definite hit, especially if you've just got time to grab a quick bite to eat. Most dishes are served in double corn tortillas with loads of fresh veggies on the side.
9. Don Taco (Alexandria)
Located in Old Town Alexandria on King Street, Don Taco has mixes a variety of flavors into truly unique combos. You can try anything from surf n' turf tacos to sriracha chicken. If you've got any room left for dessert, you'll want to be sure to try their fried oreos.
10. El Sabroson (Williamsburg)
Visiting El Sabroson in Williamsburg might feel like you've momentarily been transported to Texas. You can expect a very reasonably-priced menu with loads of options to choose from. No frills pork tacos are pictured above. For a tasty side, be sure to order the plantains.
11. Cabo Fish Taco (Blacksburg)
Located in Blacksburg, this college-town spot has some of the best tacos in the area. Among the most popular are the soy ginger shrimp tacos. And on Tuesdays, you can get one of their delicious tacos for just $2.50.
