Ye Olde Tavern will take you back in time with classic charm in Manchester Center. Built in 1790, this is a favorite place for many to check out the history, as well as enjoy a delightful meal. See what makes Ye Olde Tavern so charming and timeless as one of the oldest places in Vermont.
Ye Olde Tavern is a restaurant in Manchester Center which is listed on the Vermont Register of Historic Places. Built by Aaron Sheldon from Dorset in 1790, it the oldest inn in the state of Vermont.
It was also one of the first buildings in Manchester to house telephone lines, and was once "the headquarters for the movement to license the sale of 'spirituous beverages'."
You can still get spirited beverages here. Make it an old fashioned!
Originally opened as a tavern in 1790, Ye Olde Tavern was called The Stagecoach Inn before becoming Lockwood's Hotel in 1850. In 1860, the building was renamed Thayer's Hotel by the new owner, Steven Thayer. Pictured is a scene circa 1899, when the tavern was the Thayer Hotel.
It became the Fairview Hotel in 1902 and in 1934 it was a hotel and antique shop run by the new owner Walter Clemons.
Two of the more distinguishable aspects of this inn for the elite were the tall square columns on the front porch and the 3rd floor ballroom complete with a sprung floor. Notice the spelling of "Old" on the front.
The ballroom is the entire width of the building with 4 rooms, 1 in each corner. The sprung floor absorbs shocks and make it a softer feel. Can you imagine if this room could talk?
In 1975, it was renamed Ye Olde Tavern by Peter and Susan Palmer, who renovated the place in time for the 1976 United States Bicentennial.
In 2001, Minna and Michael Brandt took over the property and they continue to provide warm and welcoming hospitality.
The delightful atmosphere will bring you back to the 18th century, with all the modern comforts.
Well, almost all modern comforts.
A visit to the lovely building and decor would be worth a trip alone, but then add the fabulous food and you have the whole package.
A charming setting, a historical building and the perfect place to have a great meal, or an old fashioned cocktail, you'll love a trip to Ye Olde Tavern.
