Some of Utah’s best restaurants offer delicious food, but they don’t look particularly impressive from the outside. Don’t be too quick to pass judgment - these restaurants shine because of their stellar service and incredible food. Who needs a bunch of window dressing when you’re getting some of the most delicious food in the state?
1. All American Diner, Cedar City
This plain red, brick building keeps a great secret...some of the best diner food in the state! Rich, creamy biscuits and gravy, huge, fluffy pancakes, tasty burgers and sandwiches. It’s usually full of locals (which is another clue that the food is delicious), so be prepared for a wait. 501 S. Main Street, Cedar City
2. Even Stevens Sandwiches, Salt Lake City Location
The downtown Salt Lake location is right next to a 7-11 and doesn’t look like anything special. Walk inside, though, and you’ll find cool, industrial modern furnishings and incredible sandwiches. 200 S. 414 E., Salt Lake City
3. Hi-Mountain, Kamas
You might not even know that Hi-Mountain exists...it’s inside a drug store. The burgers here are simply amazing - grilled fresh, with an array of tasty toppings. Thick, creamy shakes and hand-cut fries round out your lunch. 40 N. Main Street, Kamas.
4. Joe’s Cafe, Orem
This little cafe isn’t fancy, but you’ll get some seriously yummy food here, and the super-friendly owner is usually there to greet you. The biscuits and gravy topped with over-medium eggs is one of the house specialities. 1125 S. State Street, Orem.
5. Kaiser’s Bar-B-Q and General Store, Salt Lake City
Many people driving by don’t even notice this little BBQ place; it’s located in an industrial area. Don’t dismiss it too quickly - Kaiser’s is serving up some of the best BBQ in the state. Huge portions, tender meat and tangy sauce. 962 S. 300 W., Salt Lake City.
6. La-Cai Noodle House, Salt Lake City
From the outside, La Cai Noodle House looks more like a little office building than a restaurant, but when you walk in the classy decor might surprise you. The food gets high marks across the board, from the spring rolls to the pho.
7. Moab Diner, Moab
The exterior of Moab Diner is nothing special...just a plain, beige building. The food is fabulous, diner-style comfort food. The diner gets especially high ratings for its tasty breakfast offerings. 189 S. Main Street, Moab.
8. Penny Ann’s Cafe, Draper
Who would expect to find such a gem in a strip mall? The exterior looks like pretty much every strip mall in the suburbs, so if you’re not local, you might pass it up. Penny Ann’s is the "home of the heavenly hot cakes," and it lives up to its slogan. Yummy breakfast food, great service, happy customers. 280 E. 12300 S., Draper.
9. The Pie Underground, Salt Lake City
From the outside, The Pie looks a little sketchy. As you descend the stairs, you get the feeling that you’re entering a secret lair. The secret is this: the best pizza in Salt Lake City. The walls are scarred with decades of graffiti and the furnishings are nothing to rave about. But hey, you didn’t come for the ambiance - you came for the pizza, which just cannot be replicated. 1320 E. 200 S., Salt Lake City
10. Rosa’s Cafe, Ogden
This is one of Ogden’s best restaurants, as rated by Yelp and several other consumer review sites. The building is pretty plain on the outside, but the inside is really cute with an old-fashioned counter and stools. And the food...delicious! 2660 Washington Blvd., Ogden.
11. Tacos el Gordo, Vernal
This little restaurant set up shop in an abandoned gas station, but what it lacks in ambiance it makes up in incredible Mexican food. I can’t rave enough about the tacos at this place! 395 E. Main Street, Vernal.
12. Tandoori Oven, Logan
You might not think that a restaurant connected to a gas station would be very exciting, but you’re crazy to miss this Indian restaurant in Logan. The fresh naan is pillowy and garlicky and just plain delicious, and you can’t go wrong with a single item on the menu. 720 E. 1000 N., Logan.
