Want to know a secret? There's a hidden speakeasy in Salt Lake City. It's called The Rest...and by all accounts, it's pretty amazing. Read on to find out more.
The Bodega, at 331 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City, looks pretty unassuming.
In fact, you may have visited it for lunch (it has great food!) and not even had a clue about what's in the basement. That's exactly the point.
First, make a reservation.
The hidden speakeasy in the basement is called The Rest, and while they will seat you if there's room, reservations are strongly recommended. Visit the website to make yours. When you arrive, talk to the person behind that counter at Bodega, and you'll be directed to a secret door that leads downstairs to The Rest.
The Rest is eclectic and cozy. Check out these photos to get a closer look.
The Rest doesn't play loud, annoying music. Instead, it offers up vintage vinyl, played at a volume that allows you to actually hear your dining companions.
Lionel Richie! Look at that mustache :-)
The food is not your run-of-the-mill bar fare - it's definitely unique. When you order the Beer Can Chicken, it comes with what's left of the beer can.
The duck nuggets are another specialty and The Rest is one of the few places in Utah that offers absinthe.
Beignets for dessert!
Seriously...leave room for these little powder-sugar-dusted gems. They're the house specialty.
People hate them on Yelp? A blatant lie...Yelp reviewers give The Rest a solid four stars, with about 150 reviews. Sure, it's not for everyone, but most seem to like it.
The Rest is open from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday. They're closed on Sunday and Monday. Guests must be 21, and "nicest" dress is encouraged.
