As you walk along North Lamar, you'll come across a building that seems frozen in time. German-style awnings and bright neon signs adorn this historic place, and the walls are full of intrigue. Head on down to The Tavern and experience it first-hand. This haunted Austin pub is loaded with history and mystery.
This building dates all the way back to 1916.
Hug Kuehne designed this storefront after the public houses that were popular in Germany at the time. The building was first used for The Enfield Grocery Store but was turned into a steakhouse in 1929. After prohibition ended, The Tavern was born. This classic Austin establishment has been serving cold beer since 1933.
Back in the old days, air conditioning was something to brag about!
The Tavern could boast of central air conditioning long before most establishments could. You'll still see their bright neon sign bragging about the cool breezes sweeping through. On a sweltering August day, nothing beats a blast of cold air, a refreshing drink, and a hearty hamburger.
The Tavern is also laced with a slightly seedy history.
Rumor has it that this Central Austin beer barn once operated as a brothel, and some guests have claimed to experience the ghostly spirit of a young woman named Emily. It's not uncommon to hear phantom footsteps during your late evening game of pool. You may even feel a tap on the shoulder or slight pinch on your arm even when nobody is around.
Today, the Tavern is as vibrant as ever.
With 46 HD TVs playing the most riveting sports games, a plethora of cold beers on tap, and a mouthwatering chicken fried steak, The Tavern remains an iconic Austin business. People flock to this old-school pub to watch the latest Spurs game, relax with friends, and grab a quick bite.
You haven't lived until you've experienced this Austin staple.
The Tavern is located at 922 W 12th St., and is open from 11 a.m. to midnight every day of the week. To learn more about their menu and wild history, visit www.tavernaustin.com.
