I strongly believe that the best things often come in small packages… don’t you agree? And Slaton Bakery is hard proof of that. Tucked away in the tiny town of Slaton, which is located in the southern plains of the Texas panhandle, this family-owned bakeshop has been a local icon for nearly a century – but you’d never know that based on its exterior alone. Quaint and unassuming, Slaton Bakery is one of the best small-town bakeries in Texas. I’ll go further and state that it may be one of the best bakeries in Texas. You simply must try its homemade vanilla wafers and thumbprint cookies!

You could easily drive right past The Slaton Bakery if you weren't actively looking for it, but doing so would be among the gravest of mistakes.
Located in an unassuming storefront in the heart of historic downtown Slaton, this hidden gem first opened in 1923 and has been owned and operated by the same family, the Wilsons, since 1943.
Inside, the bakery has a distinct homey feel matched only by the steady stream of Southern hospitality doled out by the Wilson family. Here, customers don't have to stand around and wait to be helped, and that is one of many reasons why folks keep coming back here time after time.
Your eyes will waste no time gravitating towards the massive dessert case. Every type of baked good imaginable is laid out before you, from cookies and cupcakes to muffins and donuts.
Speaking of donuts, the apple fritters are a fan favorite. They're slightly crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside, and coated in a light powdered sugar glaze that melts in your mouth.
The maple bacon donuts are also a big hit. Something about the sweet and salty flavor combo just works!
If you only try one thing from the bakery, however, let it be their world-famous thumbprint cookies. A buttery shortbread base is topped with a dollop of rich, creamy frosting for a bite-sized treat that is seriously addicting.
The thumbprints, which come in a variety of different colors depending on the season, are so popular that you can even find them in grocery stores throughout the state, including select H-E-B locations.
Equally as famous as the thumbprints are the bakery's vanilla wafers, which are also sold in stores all across Texas. They're better than any vanilla wafers you've ever tried before - especially when you put them on top of banana pudding (my personal favorite way to enjoy them!).
Light lunch items such as sandwiches and salads are also available. It's nice to have something savory to balance out all the sweetness!
Another thing that sets The Slaton Bakery apart is its small museum of old photographs and vintage kitchen implements. You can take a stroll through the bakery's rich and fascinating history in just a few minutes, and it's a truly remarkable experience.
So next time you find yourself in the charming small town of Slaton, keep an eye out for this giant mural. While it is certainly eye-catching, the real treasure lies just around the corner, through the doors on the front side of the building. Your sweet tooth will thank you for visiting!
