Growing up in a Jewish household, I always got excited to visit family in Houston - especially for major holidays like Rosh Hashanah or Passover. Why? Because it meant indulging in delicious food from Kenny & Ziggy's New York Delicatessen. From brisket to latkes to chopped liver, this longstanding Houston icon serves up all the classic Jewish delicacies like no place else. But above all else, the restaurant is known for having some of the biggest deli sandwiches in Texas. Piled high with traditional ingredients like pastrami and corned beef, these monstrosities require two hands (and sometimes even two people) to conquer.
Located in the heart of Houston's Galleria area, Kenny & Ziggy's New York Delicatessen is one of the most popular restaurants in the city.
A pillar of the community, this longstanding institution brings a taste of the New York Jewish deli scene to Texas, and folks can't get enough.
The restaurant recently moved locations, but its original charm still remains.
You'll feel like you're in the Big Apple as you sit surrounded by movie posters, playbills, and caricatures, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Along with the unique and unforgettable ambiance, Kenny & Ziggy's is equally known for its hulking sandwiches. There are literally dozens on the menu, and most of them are piled as high as the Empire State Building.
Whether your love language is a classic Reuben, beef tongue, pastrami, or virtually any other combination under the sun, there's a sandwich for everyone here.
Other sandwiches include chicken and tuna salad, egg salad, clubs, and more.
If you're brave enough, there's also an eight-decker sandwich called "The Zellagabetsky" that comes with a free piece of cheesecake if you can finish it all by yourself!
Sandwiches aren't the only larger-than-life menu items at Kenny & Ziggy's. The burgers also require two hands to hold...
...and the cake slices are just about the biggest you've ever seen. I recommend trying either one of the cheesecakes or the carrot cake.
If you aren't in the mood for a mile-high meal, rest assured you won't leave the table hungry.
The menu at Kenny & Ziggy's is nearly a dozen pages long, so everyone can find their perfect bite. In my opinion, trying a Jewish delicacy like matzo ball soup, latkes, or a lox and bagel platter is the best way to have the full K&Z experience.
