There are plenty of historic restaurants in Texas that have stood the test of time, and one of them can be found nestled in the heart of Houston's Third Ward. A designated cultural district, this diverse area of the city is home to Cream Burger, a local legend since 1946. This family-owned, cash-only joint is a major throwback, and the burgers are just as delicious as they were almost 80 years ago.
When you pull up to Cream Burger, located in the heart of Houston's Third Ward, the sign alone lets you know the restaurant has been around a while.
This unassuming burger joint got its start in 1946, when Verna and Willie Greenwood opened it on the corner of Elgin and Adair.
Beverly and Sandra, their daughters, have kept the family business alive, maintaining the old-school vibe with a no-frills, cash-only menu. You'll often see students from the nearby University of Houston lined up at the window, thanks to the low prices and late hours.
You don't have many options to choose from, but Cream Burger's simplicity is one of its best attributes. The burgers are so good, they really don't need any toppings, but you can add cheese, chili, or both if you so desire.
Whatever you do, make sure to get a side order of fries. They're cooked to crispy, golden perfection and sprinkled with just the right amount of salt. A must-try!
In addition to fries, other menu items include hotdogs (chili/cheese optional), Frito pies, milkshakes and floats, and ice cream - all the makings of a delicious meal brimming with nostalgia.
Cream Burger does not have a website or Facebook page, so your best bet is Googling the restaurant to see their current hours.
