Personally, I have a huge sweet tooth. As a kid, I was the master of "spoiling my dinner," and I would still choose a chocolate bar over chicken fried steak any day. Lucky for me and all my fellow dessert lovers, Texas is chock-full of candy shops that not only sell the most delicious candy you'll ever taste, but have an air of nostalgia about them complete with soda fountains and all of your old favorite treats that'll take you back to your childhood. A lot of these places are famous not only for candy but homemade desserts like rich, delectable cakes and hand-churned ice cream, so every set of taste buds can appreciate what they have to offer. Here are 9 amazing candy shops in Texas that you simply have to pay a visit to.
9. Candy Barrel (Fort Worth)
This store, located in the middle of the historic Stockyard District, was named quite literally - as in, you pick all of your candy out of barrels. They're most famous for the extensive taffy selection, but they also have tons of other selections that will take you right back to your childhood.
8. Mom and PopCORN (McKinney)
This store is most well-known for its seemingly endless selection of popcorn (obviously), but they also have an entire wall of candy, pictured above, that's sure to satisfy the sweet-tooth of your inner 5 year old.
7. The Chocolate Bar (Houston)
Ah, The Chocolate Bar. I've been coming here since before I could even talk. The name might sound a little lackluster, but I promise you they serve more than just plain chocolate bars - heck, they serve way more than just chocolate in general. From these delicious Texas Turtles and chocolate-covered strawberries, to homemade, fluffy cakes, to even gourmet, hand churned ice cream, everyone is bound to find something here that will absolutely blow up your taste buds.
6. Atomic Candy (Denton)
This candy store is nostalgia at its finest. The owner, a former Mercedes-Benz mechanic, always dreamed of owning his own business and couldn't think of a better idea than a candy store or a better place than historic downtown Denton. All of the candies you used to eat as a kid, as well as popcorn and novelty gag gifts, can be found here.
5. Hey Sugar (Roanoke)
Hey Sugar is more than just a candy store - it's a hangout spot, a party venue, and a place where priceless memories are stored. It all began when owner Kristin Brittan got her youngest son to sell candy out of a trailer at horse shows the family participated in. He was so successful that Kristin decided to open a storefront in Roanoke's restaurant district. When you walk in, it's like an instant time machine: Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is playing on a TV screen, and aisle upon aisle of your favorite childhood treats like Fizzies, rock candy, and Astro Pops stretch out in front of you. The store also hosts theme and movie nights and organizes parties for kids.
4. Blooms Candy and Soda Pop Shop (Carrollton)
Blooms is like the Walmart of retro candy. They used to sell flowers too, but the candy business took off so well that they decided to scrap the flowers. From PEZ dispensers to salt water taffy to countless retro sodas and gifts, there's something for everyone here.
3. Licorice and Lemon Drops (Shiner)
This is a true example of a small town, mom and pop candy store. From delicious homemade truffles and fudge-covered pretzels to all your favorite old-fashioned candies, you'll walk out of here with a full belly and full heart no matter what you decide on.
2. Big Top Candy Shop (Austin)
Despite being in the heart of a big city, this candy store is a time machine straight back to your childhood. The name "Big Top" is fitting - there's so much to look at, it's reminiscent of a circus. Candy lines the walls from floor to ceiling, an enormous soda fountain sits proudly in the center of the store boasting everything from italian and egg cremes to old-fashioned sodas with real sugar, and glass cases galore are filled with delectable truffles and other homemade chocolates. A nostalgic candy store may not be the first thing that comes to mind about Austin, but it's arguably one of the best.
1. La King's Confectionery (Galveston)
La King's is arguably the most famous old-fashioned candy shop in Texas. It brings back so many memories for me personally: after a long, tiring day at the beach, my parents would bring me here for a big scoop of hand-churned ice cream that we'd eat while watching the workers make salt-water taffy from scratch. They also have countless cases full of the most delicious chocolate that will ever pass your lips and nostalgic classics like rock candy. La King's is more than just a candy store - it's ab unforgettable experience to be had with your loved ones and a glimpse into what Galveston was like in the 1920s.
Ah, good old Texas. Never ceasing to impress us - from our eyes when we see how beautiful our state is to our taste buds when we try all the delicious food we have here.
