For decades, people have been justifying their Bloody Mary cravings with the unfounded belief that the delicious drinks are a hangover elixir. While that may be true for the non-alcoholic ingredients, vodka and tequila probably aren't the best cures for the very sickness they cause. But, I digress...life is short, Bloody Marys are good, and it's five o'clock somewhere. Do we need any further justification to enjoy ourselves? I think not, and on that note, here are 10 restaurants/bars in Texas that serve up a mean Bloody Mary.
1. Anvil Pub (Dallas)
No need to order food if you get one of these babies - it's breakfast, lunch, and dinner all in one! Topped with a bacon cheeseburger slider, shrimp, cheese, a hot dog, pickled asparagus & okra, an onion ring, and probably a few other things, you'll be hard-pressed to find a Bloody Mary as unique as this one.
2. Chef Point Cafe (Watauga)
...okay, I take that last statement back. This outrageous cocktail just might be the craziest Bloody Mary out there. The base includes a double serving of spicy drink mix and is garnished (is that even an applicable word in this instance?) with "Better Than Sex Fried Chicken," shrimp, waffle fries, bacon, jalapenos, and a Nolan Ryan beef slider. Not what you'd expect from a gas station restaurant.
3. Star Bar (Austin)
I promise this is the last time I'll go back on my word. Star Bar's "Hail Mary" definitely beats out the previous two - and its name is very fitting because you'll need to say a prayer or two if you have any hope to finish this. It's topped with a full course meal: a hot dog, hickory-smoked bacon, garlic shrimp, onion rings, a slider, chicken nuggets, crab meat, deviled eggs, pickled okra, cheese, cherry tomatoes, and a cinnamon roll. You won't ever need to eat again.
4. The Grove (Houston)
Slightly tamer than those last few kitchen-sink creations, The Grove focuses more on flavor than extravagance. Made with Herradura Resposado tequila and home-grown, oregano-infused tomato juice, and garnished with a picked okra spear and a strip of smoked bacon, this "Bloody Maria" will have your taste buds doing a happy dance.
5. Blue Sushi Sake Grill (Fort Worth)
I know what you're thinking, and yes, I'm aware that this is a martini glass. This upscale sushi bar does their Bloody Mary a little differently. Keeping up with the classy feel of the restaurant, Blue Sushi Sake Grill's BM comes in martini form. The secret ingredients? Onion-pepper infused vodka and - wait for it - ponzu sauce. Don't knock it 'till ya try it, y'all.
6. Jacoby's Restaurant & Mercantile (Austin)
Fresh and rustic, this Bloody Mary is made with Jacoby's homemade hot sauce, served in a mason jar, and topped with house-made summer sausage, picked veggies, and a chili powder rim. Your mouth will be on fire in the best way possible.
7. Lounge 31 (Dallas)
Lounge 31 doesn't play around when it comes to heat, which is perfect for us Texans. Their Asian-infused cocktail has soy sauce, Sriracha, wasabi paste, togarashi, and black pepper, and is garnished with a shrimp tempura and a shishito pepper. If I didn't have you at Sriracha, there's a serious problem here.
8. Down House (Houston)
This Bloody Mary is definitely not as outlandish as some of the others, but it does come with a beer which more than makes up for it. Topped with a fried chicken wing, it's basically brunch in a glass.
9. South Congress Cafe (Austin)
This quaint little Austin cafe serves up one of the city's most loved Bloody Marys - probably partially due to the fact that the glass is double the size it should be. It's filled to the brim with spicy mix and Tito's vodka, and garnished with celery, olives, and a picked banana pepper. Sophisticated and elegant while still packing that signature punch. What more could you ask for?
10. Beaver's (Houston)
Aptly named, "The Squealin' Mary," Beaver's take on the classic drink includes bacon-infused vodka, a bacon and sugar salt rim, and a candied bacon garnish. We sure do love our pork here in Texas.
Which one of these sounds the best to you? Where in Texas have you had a Bloody Mary that rivals all contenders?
