The family-friendly Greenbrier Restaurant in Gatlinburg is a fabulous place if you're looking for something delicious for lunch, but it's also a great place to find a ghost. A friendly ghost, to be sure - but a ghost. Care for a starter with a side of the supernatural? Because it's what we've got, and you're going to love it!
According to local legend, a young, spritely ghost named Lydia haunts the Greenbrier Restaurant. Originally a cabin, the restaurant was built in the late thirties and was later converted to a restaurant. And here? There are NO qualms about their friendly ghost. In fact, you can even order an honorary dessert: Lydia's Chocolate Suicide for Two.
It's said that young Lydia was left at the altar, waiting for hours for the love of her life that never came. She was so bereft, that she hung herself from the cabin rafters. To layer the story a bit more, the body of her love was found a couple of days later. He hadn't left her at the alter at all - no, he'd been killed by a cougar in the forest. The heartbreaking end to the lovers still haunts the area to this day.
There are multiple accounts of folks who have seen her in the restaurant, some who claim she doesn't even realize that she has passed away. The best chance to see her is to check the old building stairs - most find her on the second floor landing. It's where she supposedly hung herself, so many years ago..
It's said that a caretaker who lived at the lodge was woken by her moans of, "mark my grave, mark my grave," for ages before he found her final resting place and marked it. Her screams haven't been heard since. Now she's quiet, forever wandering the last place that saw her alive.
This is so creepy...
