Tennessee is known for its fantastic food and kind people, but there are a couple of things those nice folk just can't stand for...and that's messing up our food. (It's a bit cyclical, you know.) We've asked around and come up with eight food faux-pas that no one in Tennessee is wont to get away with - so don't push it. Do you agree with the Volunteer state...?
8. Try to serve up meat sans three.
The meat 'n three is a classic southern staple, and Tennessee is no exeption. You serve up your meat with three sides and that's the only way to do it. Sorry.
7. You best not claim North Carolina bbq is better.
What?! No. Memphis and Nashville have bbq down pat, so don't you go trying to switch out our classic bbq sauce on us now.
6. Don't serve up catfish without hushpuppies.
Some local, all-Tennessean folk may be able to get away with a lack of hushpuppies, but it's a rare thing. Few and far between.
5. Grainy cornbread? No thank you!
Cornbread is known for it's sweet, moise texture and it's just not the same if you try it out any other way. Serve it up with butter, of course.
4. Banana pudding isn't the same without Nilla wafers
Tennessee is lauded for its amazing deciation to banana pudding, it's celebrated with a state festival and by families everywhere. The Nilla wafer belongs in the dish just as much as the banana, if you ask Tennessee.
3. Hot chicken MUST be served with a slice of white bread.
You may think it's weird at first, but here in Tennessee we understand that the bread is necessary to cut the heat. Water, please!
2. Iced tea without sweetener?!
Wait - there's no way this can be done. There's no unsweet tea in the south, you crazy people!
1. Biscuits are a must.
There's really no wrong way to serve up biscuits, they simply have to be served. With gravy or jam or butter or all by themselves, they just have to be on the menu. Period.
