Though it sat empty and abandoned for many years, this South Dakota historical site is once again active and full of activity. But if you’re thinking about visiting, we hope you’re hungry; this old depot of the Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul RR has been transformed to a train-themed restaurant that serves downright mouthwatering food.
The Depot Pub and Grill dates all the way back to 1908. For 40 years it was used as a depot for passengers and freight.
In 1990 it was renovated to the historical restaurant locals and tourists now know and love.
Step inside, and you’ll see that while the site has been refurbished, the atmosphere of the old depot is still subtly intact. Browse the train memorabilia, view the historic photos, and watch the large scale model trains make their way along the perimeter of the bar area.
An active rail line right outside can be viewed through the glass windows in the dining room. You are also welcome to sit outside and dine on their outdoor seating deck for a better view of the trains passing by!
This charming restaurant is known for their spectacular beer selections; they carry 30 domestic and craft beers on tap.
You’ll also find mighty delicious lunch and supper specials that include the classic Depot Burger, buffalo burgers, Depot Dinner Steak, homemade country fried steak, gourmet mac & cheese, Scotch egg diner, homemade famous soups and so much more.
It’s a neat experience to visit this place and think about all the people who have passed through. If you love history, trains, and delicious food, then you’ll have a fantastic time at this wonderful restaurant. The Depot Pub & Grill is located at 210 S Main St, Mitchell, SD 57301.
