South Carolina is known for many things, including a great backdrop of history and fabulous food. What happens when you combine those two? Let's take a look.

Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island is a restaurant and bar dedicated to the iconic Edgar Allan Poe.

Why would someone name a restaurant after a poet specializing in mystery and macabre? It's likely that Poe actually crossed the very path upon which Poe's Tavern now rests.

In the fall of 1827 a young Private Edgar A. Perry (Poe), who had recently enlisted in the U.S. Army, arrived in Charleston bound for his first post at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. In case you're not familiar with it, Sullivan's is a very small island off the coast of Charleston and Mount Pleasant.

Poe was stationed for a short while on the island and it's widely believed that his experiences in the Lowcountry and on Sullivan's Island can be found twisted into his famous literary works.

Poe's Tavern arrived on the scene more than 10 years ago and has been delighting Poe fans with great food served in a tasteful, yet fun, shrine to the late poet and writer.

The menu is loaded with soups, salads and hearty angus beef burgers with names like "Goldbug" and the "Annabelle Lee."

And the walls are adorned with haunting and somber images of Poe.

Poe's burgers are nothing short of perfection. And they're always coming up with new and exciting combinations, like this 100% angus beef burger on top of peanut butter and jelly and topped with bacon and jalapenos. To celebrate National Peanut Butter & Jelly Day, Poe's added this treat to their specials that day.

Poe's doesn't just borrow the name without paying tribute. Each January, on Poe's birthday, they host a great big party for Poe. Everyone is welcome...

....even Poe look-a-likes! Seriously though, we think they must have hired this actor for the party. Right?

Online reviews and social media show that Poe's has been applauded for the great care their staff shows toward customers. We recently found this notice to customers on their Facebook page. And now we're applauding Poe's for the great care they show for staff. They what? They close the whole restaurant and have a staff party? That's love.

Poe's is a unique dining experience. The haunting images of Poe and knowing he lived on Sullivan's Island while writing some of his truly spectacular work combine to make this one restaurant in South Carolina you have to put on your bucket list.
