Some experiences are outside the ordinary in every way possible. Such is the case with this amazing South Carolina restaurant located on the southern most island in the state. There are no bridges from the mainland of South Carolina to Daufuskie Island. What's more, the main mode of transportation on this little island paradise is golf carts.
Daufuskie Island is one of the South's best kept secrets.
It's not far from the mainland, yet it's far enough away to feel like you're completely disconnected from the outside world. Anyone coming and going does so by boat. It's five miles long and 2.5 miles wide - and golf carts are the main mode of transportation for most of the 600 or so people who call the island home.
The serene island was the setting for one of Pat Conroy's novels, "The Water is Wide." Jimmy Buffet sings about it in the song "Prince of Tides," and in 2014 Architectural Digest featured the Daufuskie Island part-time home of John Mellencamp.
Multiple ferry services run from Hilton Head to Daufuskie, making a trip to this island an even more exciting adventure. You'll want to head to Freeport Marina, the home of a little shopping village that includes a general store, where you can rent your very own golf cart for the day and take a tour of the island.
When you're finished exploring and riding around in your golf cart, head back to Freeport Marina and have lunch at Old Daufuskie Crab Company (ODCC). ODCC is the quintessential island restaurant filled with friendly people and no pretention whatsoever.
Neither visitors nor locals head to ODCC with anything fancy in mind. They show up in anything from their bathing suits to their favorite old pair of jeans. And at any given time one could show up in the middle of a heated but friendly cornhole tournament taking place on the lawn centerstage in the outdoor seating area.
At Old Daufuskie Crab Company, the food speaks for itself - and it says "fresh."
If the weather turns while you're there, no worries, you'll find the same great view from the inside tables and bar at ODCC.
Daufuskie Island and the Old Daufuskie Crab Company are an island combination everyone should experience.
Getting there is half the fun. Depart Broadcreek Marina on Hilton Head Island and head to Freeport Marina. More information about the ferry, including a schedule, is available at this link.
