What's the difference, really, between a bar and saloon? Surprisingly, there are a few little-thought-of distinctions. For instance, the noun 'bar' came about to describe the establishment that served drinks over a, you guessed it, bar. Bars came about in the 16th century.
Saloons, on the other hand, didn't evolve until nearly two hundred years later. Their name, at the time, meant a great big hall where gatherings were held. Well, that's still the case with saloons, even though they are far and few between in South Carolina these days.
To find perhaps the best one in the state, you'll need to travel a bit off the beaten path, to Ladson. It's here that you'll find the Honky Tonk Saloon, which runs the gambit of everything from a welcoming place for supper to a great big dance hall where you can brush up on your line dancing skills of yesteryear.
The Honky Tonk Saloon is open every day from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Get there early in the evening if you're only interested in eating. The food is outstanding and the menu is extensive.
Whether you just want a round of appetizers, or desire more, like a burger, rib platter, tacos, or more, you'll find it on the menu.
And don't let the word 'saloon' fool you. This is the perfect place to settle in with some friends for dinner, drinks...
... and later in the evening, even some rowdy fun.
The Honky Tonk always has a slew of events on the agenda, making it a fun place to gather any time!
