If there's one thing Rhode Islanders can appreciate, it's a perfectly made pastry. The bakeries here in the Ocean State are second to none, and we're more than happy to treat ourselves. But one bakery in particular has perfected the art of the zeppole, not to mention plenty of other Italian and French pastries. Here's why you should probably get in your car and go to LaSalle Bakery in Providence as soon as you can.
So what is a zeppole, exactly?
It's an amazing Italian pastry that consists of deep fried dough, powdered sugar, and whatever else (cream, jelly, etc.) the baker desires. In other words, it's a little piece of perfection.
LaSalle Bakery has been around for decades -- in fact, the father of the current owner, Michael Manni, Jr., worked there (in its prior location) in 1965 at the age of 15.
Michael Sr. worked at the bakery through high school, college, and his military years. He eventually bought the business from the original owner, who stayed on for 10 more years to mentor him.
The bakery is now owned by Michael Manni, Jr., and his parent still play an important role in production.
When you walk through the doors, you can be sure you're getting the same quality you've been getting for decades.
Obviously, this place is famous for zeppole, and for good reason -- they're exceptional.
They are baked fresh daily in several flavors, and sometimes they're even decorated for holidays or special occasions.
But zeppole are far from the only thing you'll find at LaSalle.
They sell cakes (both pre-made and customized), pies, cookies, and plenty of pastries.
You'll notice a new special treat popping up each week, such as profiteroles (also known as cream puffs).
There's also a cafe menu with tasty breakfast and lunch items as well as a list of coffee drinks. In other words, you're welcome to sit down and stay awhile.
And can we all just take a moment to appreciate this cannoli tart?
No diet is worth skipping this.
The special selections rotate seasonally, and you'll find all kinds of holiday treats inside.
Order your gingerbread cookies, winter cakes, and pies and take some of the stress out of holiday party plans.
LaSalle Bakery is open daily from 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., except on Sundays, when they close at 6:00 p.m.
Of course, the goodies go fast, so come early if you have your heart set on something specific.
