Flo's Clam Shack and Drive In have a rich and storied history in Middletown, Rhode Island. The Drive In first opened in 1936, specializing in the newly popularized fried style of seafood. It's been a seasonal staple in town ever since. No trip to the Middletown, Rhode Island shore is complete without a fried seafood snack from Flo’s, bonus points if you eat it with your feet in the sand.
Flo's Clam Shack opens in early March and closes on Halloween, offering Middletown an extended seafood season that runs a little ahead of the beach crowd. The Drive In follows a similar timeline and is a great option for beach bound takeout or dinner after an exciting coastal day out.
On the menu you'll find all the New England seafood classics, chowda (only acceptably pronounced like that), fried clams, oysters, calamari and more.
In addition to the food, locals know Flo's by its giant decorative shark parked outside the restaurant. Don't forget to say hello, it's only respectful.
Because of its coastal location, the seafood at Flo's is as fresh as possible. That lobster you're eating may well have been plucked out of the ocean this morning. Located just a few miles from upscale Newport, Rhode Island, Flo’s is a more accessibly priced spot for fresh seafood.
If you're not a seafood fan or you've had your fill after a week of vacation, Flo's also offers hamburgers, hot dogs, cheese fries and other classic beach food.
The Clam Shack offers a beautiful view of Newport Beach from the patio and the Drive In is a whimsical, retro experience just a few towns over in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
After a salty, sun-soaked day on a Rhode Island beach, nothing quite hits the spot like a plate of fried seafood. At Flo's Clam Shack you're dining on some of the best, and supporting a longstanding local business.
