Sit back and relax, for Pittsburgh's most timeless restaurant has quite the story to tell. A fairy tale, if you will. Hyeholde Restaurant - just 20 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, has been a staple in the Coraopolis community for more than 70 years. If any story deserves to start with once upon a time, it is certainly this one. You'll fall in love with this whimsical restaurant near Pittsburgh.
William Kryskill made his beloved wife, Clara, a promise back in the mid-1920s. One day, she would live within the walls of a castle he had built for her. But the groom conveniently left out one rather important detail.
They would not hire builders. Rather, the Kryskills would build their dream themselves. Thus they embarked on a seven-year journey of building a fairy tale castle that would serve as both their home and a restaurant.
How magical are these Hyeholde photos?
Today a historic landmark, as designated by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, Hyeholde Restaurant welcomed its first dinner guests in 1938, thus beginning a tradition that continues well into the 21st century.
Ownership of the charming restaurant changed hands in the 1980s but again passed back to the Kryskill family when the couple's daughter and son-in-law purchased the property in 1991. Executive Chef Chris O’Brien would later buy the restaurant.
