What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Prantl's Bakery? If you're like most Pittsburghers, you probably immediately think of the charming bakery's burnt almond torte, named Pennsylvania's best cake by The Food Network. Now, however, that famously delicious cake has a little bit of competition: The thumbprint cookie. That's right. Prantl's Bakery in Pittsburgh makes thumbprint cookies, using the original recipe, in more than 60 sensational flavors.
Sink your teeth into a classic thumbprint cookie at Prantl's Bakery and you just might find yourself overcome by nostalgia.
A Pittsburgh original, thumbprints first appeared in the city in 1980, made by Kevin Ulrich of Kaufmann's Arcade Bakery. And, for decades, Pittsburghers frequented the Arcade Bakery to stock up on their favorite thumbprint cookies.
Then, Kaufmann's - and with it Arcade Bakery - permanently closed its doors, leaving the famed thumbprints without a home.
But, that all changed in 2017 when Ulrich joined Prantl's Bakery to make the famous thumbprint cookies, now available in more than 60 flavors.
In fact, next time you're craving a classic thumbprint, just stop by Prantl's locations in Shadyside, Market Square, or Greensburg.
There, you'll discover an assortment of tantalizing flavors from classic chocolate and vanilla to peanut butter and s'mores.
Or, go for something a little bolder like the strawberry cheesecake, mint chocolate chip, or the pumpkin.
Of course, you can't stop at Prantl's without grabbing a burnt almond torte cake for the road. Or, try other goodies, such as junior pastries, cookies, and donuts.
