In the heart of downtown Harmony, just a half an hour outside of Pittsburgh, stands a restaurant that draws visitors for its delicious food, relaxed atmosphere, and for the tales it has told. A haunted restaurant near Pittsburgh, the Harmony Inn promises a memorable experience along with a delightful meal.
The Haunted Harmony Inn, originally home to prominent Pennsylvanian Austin Pearce in 1856, underwent numerous transformations during its storied history.
Facing business ruin, Pearce eventually sold his home to the Zieglers, a family that was also well-known in Pennsylvania at the time. Zielger renovated the home, transforming it into a popular saloon and hotel.
The Ziegler Hotel earned distinction as one of the first establishments to have a liquor license.
Ownership exchanged hands numerous times over the years – and the hotel and saloon eventually became a restaurant – with the latest owners, Bob and Jodi McCafferty, purchasing the haunted eatery in 2013.
But, those are the necessary basics. Even with the transformation of the charming building, one common thread remains: Those who tell tales of a haunting by, mind you, friendly spirits.
Whose spirit wanders throughout the Harmony Inn depends on with whom you talk and what you believe. The one thing all who have experienced paranormal activity at the restaurant can agree: The spirits are friendly.
One spirit who frequents the Harmony Inn is believed to be a man named Louie. Louie is said to have tragically met his untimely death when he fell down the stairs of the restaurant and broke his neck. Today, his spirit shows his presence by leaving dimes and quarters all over the restaurant.
Another is a little girl in a white dress who wanders around the second floor of the restaurant. Who she is remains a mystery, although some have called her Emily. Emily can often be seen sitting in front of an upstairs window, forlorn as she stares outside.
Even if you don't see the apparition of a spirit, you may just experience one of the many paranormal encounters said to take place at the Harmony Inn. Guests have reported they feel as though someone is watching them when no one's there and cold air suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere gushes through the building.
Some guests have even told of seeing a man's reflection in a mirror – but there was no one there.
Many guests visit the Harmony Inn both for their menu and for the possibility of experiencing a paranormal encounter. That leads us to the delightful challenge you'll have when it comes to ordering your meal. The Harmony Inn's menu features many dishes, including pastrami melt, tomato basil portabella, strudels, salads, burgers, Reubens, and pasta.
Don't forget to save room for dessert – chocolate stout cake, blueberry strudel, raspberry almond torte cake, or cherry cobbler parfait, for example.
Raise your glass and toast a delicious meal at Harmony Inn, a haunted restaurant near Pittsburgh, but why stop there? Pittsburgh's rich history makes it rife with tales of hauntings. Plan a road trip through city the see to visit these six haunted cemeteries.
