With its long and rich history, Pennsylvania's bound to have plenty of spirits that still remain frozen in time, sometimes trying to make contact with those still alive. Numerous restaurants throughout the state claim to be haunted but only one is said to be Pennsylvania's most haunted restaurant: Jean Bonnet Tavern in Bedford.
Jean Bonnet Tavern, which dates back to 1762, has had some impressive guests, including George Washington, during its storied history.
Originally a trading post and French fort, Jean Bonnet Tavern played a role in the Whiskey Rebellion in the late 1790s. Pennsylvanians, angry that a federal excise tax had been imposed on whiskey, staged a protest at the tavern.
The popular tavern saw plenty of activity during its history, including a frequent visitor to the bar who is said to have been hung there, but the tales of spirits haunting Jean Bonnet Tavern didn't begin until 1957 when the Enyeart family bought the property.
Employees and visitors all tell tales of the paranormal. A bartender, for example, and her friend once locked the restaurant after a long night, and escorted a drunk fella home. The tavern was empty when they left but upon their return...
The duo peeked through the window and noticed a man (who had been hung centuries before) sitting at the bar, having a leisurely drink. After they reentered the tavern, the bartender and her friend frantically searched the restaurant and the inn - all to no avail. No one was there.
Guests have described feeling a touch on their arm, only to turn around to find...no one there. One man, a non-drinker, saw a group that looked as though it stepped straight from the past, standing in the doorway watching the action at the bar. He glanced away briefly and when he looked back they were gone.
Pay careful attention when you visit Jean Bonnet Tavern. You may hear dishes breaking and unexpected screams. Doors spontaneously open and shut when no one is there. Shadows of figures roam the building. You never know what you'll discover.
Of course, lunch or dinner goes hand-in-hand with the paranormal. Peruse the lunch and dinner menus that feature a vast assortment of fresh dishes, including gluten-free, sandwiches, burgers, entrees, soups, salads, and appetizers.
Cap off your experience with one of Jean Bonnet Tavern's signature desserts: oatmeal pie, peanut butter pie, or triple layer carrot cake. Seasonal desserts are also available.
After your meal, stop by the Cabin Shoppe right next door to the restaurant. The charming shop, in a log cabin built during the 1700s and moved to Bedford in 2006, sells a variety of merchandise, including candles, jewelry, and stationery.
