Treat yourself to a scrumptious Philadelphia cheesesteak in Pennsylvania at its birthplace – Pat’s King of Steaks on East Passyunk Avenue.
The story of the Philly cheesesteak’s birth begins at the Italian Market in South Philadelphia, where Pat Olivieri had a hot dog stand.
While a good hot dog is hard to pass by, Pat decided to change things up a bit – well, at least for his lunch. After grilling a helping of chopped meat, he placed it on a hot dog roll and topped it with onions.
That’s when a regular visitor to the hot dog stand, a local cab driver, inquired as to what Pat was eating and asked for one himself. It was originally known as the steak sandwich.
However, at the request of customers, Pat added cheese to his famous sandwich, thus creating the famous Philly cheesesteak sandwich. The rest, as they say, is history.
