Pittsburgh is known for its many firsts: The first commercial radio station, the first Ferris Wheel, and the first public television station in the United States. But, did you know that one of the most recognizable (and, some say, the most delicious) sandwiches in the world was born right here in the Pittsburgh area? Sink your teeth into one of the world's most famous sandwiches and get a glimpse of local history when you visit the Big Mac Museum near Pittsburgh, tucked in one of the most unique McDonald's in Pennsylvania.
Sat along a bustling North Huntingdon highway, the Big Mac Museum pays homage to one of the world's top sandwiches.
If you've not been to this McDonald's in PA, add it to your to-do list.
Inspired by the consumer's desire to have something more than a plain burger, McDonald's franchisee Jim Delligatti created a special sauce to top his new concoction - the Big Mac - in 1967.
Burger lovers were bored. Delligatti realized that, got creative, and voila. The Big Mac was born.
Delligatti's Big Mac consisted of two hamburgers topped with that special sauce, pickles, onion, lettuce, and cheese.
Remember that old television commercial? Most of us probably knew what was on the Big Mac just from singing along - special sauce, pickles, onion, lettuce, and cheese.
Unfortunately, McDonald's had little interest in Delligatti's idea for a new sandwich, although he tried selling the concept to the company for two years.
After getting nowhere with corporate, Delligatti began selling the Big Mac in his Uniontown McDonald's to the delight of his customers and, lo and behold, McDonald's saw the sandwich's popularity and began selling it nationwide.
The Big Mac was a bona fide hit in the Pittsburgh-area.
