Turn back the clock to a simpler time. Way back to the Roaring Twenties. Americans were devouring the literature of such greats as Sinclair Lewis. Hollywood introduced its first talking film. And dance - the foxtrot and the waltz, for example - was all the rage. The 1920's were also the era of prohibition, a ban on alcohol. This hidden speakeasy in Pittsburgh will take your straight back to the Roaring Twenties.
The Speakeasy sits below the lobby in the Omni William Penn Hotel, hidden as it would have been back when alcohol was illegal during Prohibition.
Disappear downstairs to the Speakeasy where you'll feel as though you've stepped back into the early 20th century.
Speakeasy was a term coined right here in Western Pennsylvania in 1888. A frustrated saloon owner, Kate Hester of McKeesport, refused to pay her saloon license of $500. (The hefty fee had jumped from $50.)
As a result, she ran an illegal saloon, something she and patrons attempted to hide from the authorities. She kept patrons from getting rowdy by admonishing them to speak easy.
Today, Pittsburghers can enjoy all the favorite drinks of the pre- and Prohibition era.
Peruse the menu that boasts an assortment of whiskies, bourbon, local beers, high balls, beer, and wine.
Pair your drink with one of The Speakeasy's light dishes. Smoked tomato hummus, fresh mozzarella, pate, and pickled sours are among your choices.
Speakeasy welcomes guests from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Friday and Saturday between 5 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.
