Twenty-first century Pittsburgh promises plenty of places to kick back and relax with an alcoholic drink – from sophisticated lounges to casual bars. But, turn back the clock to nearly a century ago, and Pittsburghers couldn’t enjoy a drink whenever they wanted. Prohibition, in fact, made it illegal for anyone in the United States to manufacture or to sell alcohol between 1920 and 1933. Still, underground spots, like this hidden speakeasy in Pittsburgh, popped up for those who didn’t mind snubbing the law.
Journey back through the pages of time to the Roaring Twenties when you visit Speakeasy, discreetly tucked in the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. You’ll have to head downstairs, below the lobby, to find the entrance.
When you walk through the front doors, you might swear you’ve been transported to another era – when Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Stein were in their heyday, and Charles Lindberg would make history on The Spirit of St. Louis.
Prior to its rebirth as a classic speakeasy, Speakeasy served as a storage space, hidden from the rest of the hotel.
Sit down and relax in one of the comfortable, plush chairs as you review the menu that features a selection of pre-prohibition and post-prohibition drinks, including such favorites as…
Whiskey, bourbon, single malts, and blended Scotch.
If you’re not sure what to order, ask the bartender, who might recommend such house classics as the Manhattan, the Rob Roy, or the Rusty Nail.
You might even want to try one of the Throwback Classics, said to be popular during Prohibition. Order a Sidecar, a Manhattan, or an Aviation, for example.
Satisfy your appetite with a dish from the Light Fare menu, too. Choose from such favorites as pate, fresh mozzarella, or smoked tomato hummus.
Travel back in time at Speakeasy, open Tuesday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
