If you love the sweet, complex taste of marionberries, the Beaver State is a dream come true. Oregon grows between 28 and 33 million pounds of the berries every year, and we've found plenty of ways to make good use of them. From tasty homemade jam to ice cream, we love to celebrate the marionberry, but one of our favorite ways to pay homage is with a slice of marionberry pie. Here's the best place in the state to get one.
You'd have to be living under a rock to not know about Oregon's marionberries. These berries were developed right here at Oregon State, in cooperation with the USDA. They're a hybrid blackberry, and they have a sweet, but tart taste that's more complex than other berries. Marionberry pie is a dessert staple in the Beaver State.
After three generations of berry farming in Salem, the Roth family opened Willamette Valley Pie Company, and they've been serving up the best marionberry pie in the state ever since. You can visit the bakery and cafe located right at the berry processing plant; the address is 2994 82nd Ave. NE, Salem, OR 97305.
People drive from all over the state to get the marionberry pies at Willamette Valley Pie Company. The filling has just the right amount of sweetness without being cloying, and the crust is perfectly flaky.
Choose from the regular crust, or the artisan marionberry lattice crust.
Mix things up a little and try the Marionberry Crunch Pie, which has a crumbly topping instead of a top pie crust. It's particularly good if you're going to top it with a creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream.
The smell of fresh-baked pies greets you the moment you walk in the door. In addition to marionberry, the bakery creates all kinds of delicious pie flavors. You can get your pie already baked, or take a frozen pie home - it's ready to put right in the oven, so your house can be filled with the smell of fresh-baked marionberry pie.
You can gather up some pies in the bakery, but first you might want to stop in at the cafe for a treat.
You'll certainly need a slice of marionberry pie to keep up your strength for the drive back home, right?
