Oregon is the place to be if you love seafood, and the clam chowder here is especially delicious. There's a little cafe that got its start on the coast more than 70 years ago, and it serves clam chowder that's so good that it's known all over the world. Check out Mo's Seafood & Chowder:
Mo's opened its doors in Newport in 1946, and it has an incredible history.
Mo was a wonderful woman with tons of energy. In addition to running Mo's as a single mom during its early years, she hosted a community radio show, cared for her customers, and hosted celebrities and dignitaries from all over the world.
Mo's quickly became a popular spot for locals, visitors, and even celebrities. Mo met and fed celebrities like Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, and Joanne Woodward.
Robert Kennedy visited the little cafe in May, 1968, and fell in love with Mo's chowder. He enjoyed it so much that he insisted on taking a couple buckets of it with him on the plane! Senator Kennedy also invited Mo to join him on his trip to Los Angeles, but she declined. He was assassinated just days later at The Ambassador Hotel in L.A.
Today, Mo's Seafood & Chowder has several locations around the state, but the original Newport restaurant still stands.
There's a garage door installed on the front of the building, and on sunny days it's raised to provide diners with fresh, coastal air. Back in the early days of Mo's, a customer finished her meal and left. Instead of putting her car in reverse to back out of the parking lot, she put it in drive and drove right through the front of the restaurant! Instead of yelling and screaming, Mo comforted the woman and said, "Well, we’ll just put in a garage door so you can drive in anytime you want."
The clam chowder is still the most popular item on the menu, and for good reason. The New England-style chowder is thick and creamy, made with bacon and topped with a couple thick slices of butter. Get it by the bowl...
...or just order up a cup.
For the ultimate meal, get your chowder in a sourdough cannonball bowl, and try it "slumgullion" with Oregon pink shrimp on top.
While you're at Mo's, you'll also want to try the halibut fish and chips, and the fish tacos, both local favorites.
Don't leave without a slice of peanut butter pie! It's a signature dessert that's been on the menu for years.
If you're not a peanut butter fan, go with the marionberry cobbler.
The chowder here is so popular that Mo's now offers its clam chowder base for sale so you can make your own at home.
Visit the original Mo's in Newport seven days a week. It's open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Make sure to visit Mo's website to learn more about its history and view the full menu. You'll find more mouthwatering chowder photos on the restaurant's Facebook page.
