Oregon is a place that welcomes the weird, and is home to some truly unique attractions. So a sneaker-themed coffee shop in Portland doesn't seem at all out of place. Deadstock Coffee prides itself on its 'snob-free' coffee, and it really is an accessible, neighborhood coffee shop... with a bit of a PDX edge. Owned and operated by Ian Williams, Deadstock Coffee is a true Portland iconoclast; a place where sneaker culture and coffee culture are brewed into one unique cup.
Located in Portland’s Chinatown neighborhood, Deadstock Coffee is easily the most unique coffee shop in the state.
As a speciality coffee roaster, Deadstock brews all their own coffees. Bold and complex, their whole bean coffee is on another level.
With blends like "Fresh Prince" and "Slow Jamz," the coffee here is anything but ordinary.
Which is only fitting, because Deadstock Coffee itself is anything but ordinary.
A sneaker-themed coffee shop, the decor here is all inspired by sneaker culture.
Sneaker culture essentially describes the culture surrounding the ubiquitous footwear - those who collect sneakers, the sneaker's appropriation into high fashion, the sneaker industry itself, and sneakers in popular media.
Sneaker collecting really started gaining steam in the 1980s, with the emergence of Michael Jordan's eponymous Air Jordan.
Like any other cultural movement, sneaker culture is the sum of its parts: basketball, hip hop, big brands such as Adidas, Nike, Puma, and Reebok, and a bit of a rebellious, counterculture spirit.
More than mere consumerism, sneaker culture is a way for people from all over to connect over a shared passion.
And that's what Deadstock Coffee is about. It's the creation of Ian Williams, a former Nike employee who wanted to find a space for sneaker culture to thrive.
And what better place to accomplish this, than a community coffee shop?
So Williams did his research, and basically taught himself how to develop and roast his own coffee (and, you know, how to open and run a specialty coffee shop).
Deadstock roasts all their own brews, and the coffee here is really, really good.
It's a sneaker-themed coffee shop, and Williams delivers on both: the coffee is exceptional, and the sneaker game is strong.
Ever community-minded, Deadstock also hosts sneaker donation drives and charitable events that really 'pay it forward.'
Deadstock Coffee in PDX is a refreshing take on the neighborhood coffee shop. And we're here for it.
