There are very few places in Oklahoma that have the history and following of Cattlemen's Steakhouse in Oklahoma City. For over 100 years, this award-winning restaurant has been serving Oklahomans terrific food, and they seem to only be getting better with age (if that's even possible!) Here's a look back at where they started to the mouthwatering steaks they serve today.
Cattlemen's Steakhouse is the longest operating restaurant in Oklahoma and has been in business since 1910. They are located in the in the historic Stockyard City district of Oklahoma City at 1309 South Agnew Avenue. Back in the day, Cattlemen's was one of the few places that stayed open after dark, which brought in a more rowdy crowd. During The Prohibition, it became known for its "liquid delights" and was a popular eatery in town.
The fate of Cattlemen's changed one night in 1945. Hank Frey, the then owner, was in a gambling game with a local rancher, Mr. Gene Wade. Mr. Frey was running out of money and offered up Cattlemen's in the pot, alongside Mr. Wade's life savings. What was the bet you ask? If Wade could roll a 'hard six,' otherwise known as two 3s. And in one roll of the dice, the ownership transferred to Mr. Wade.
Today, Cattlemen's is known for its award-winning steaks and terrific food. They've never wavered on their quality of food over the years and patrons love visiting it in the Oklahoma National Stockyards.
You'll be impressed with the perfectly aged, award-winning steaks, alongside delicious side dishes. It's the kind of place where friends and family can gather together and experience a piece of Oklahoma history while enjoying the terrific food.
Just wait until you see the steak menu! There are so many to choose from and the best part is, you can't go wrong with any cut. Plus, you can enhance your meal by adding grilled shrimp, fresh sauteed mushrooms or fresh steamed broccoli w/cheese sauce.
