Some of Ohio's best bars just happen to be behind the most plain, unassuming doors. Volstead is no exception -- this speakeasy-style space has been part of the Sandusky community since 2014, and plenty of people still walk by it without knowing what's inside. And while the charming little city of Sandusky has plenty of great bars to enjoy, you won't find anything quite like this in town.
Volstead is located in the Green Door building, which just happens to be an ex-brothel.
It was also a winery at one time, although that's not quite as interesting.
The space inside is quite compact, but the team does a great job of making it feel cozy and intimate rather than stuffy.
The concept of the speakeasy dates all the way back to the Prohibition era, and while those days are thankfully long over, you'll definitely feel like you've gone back in time when you're here.
Grab a menu and you just might find a list of house rules... but don't worry, they're easy to follow.
This is the place for quiet conversations, savoring drinks slowly, and keeping cell phone use to a minimum (or better yet, disconnecting from technology entirely).
From the traditional speakeasy-style lights in the windows to the old brick walls, everything here feels extremely authentic.
The couple that opened this bar has done a fantastic job of making it feel real.
Fortunately, you don't actually have to look over your shoulder when you're here... although the drinks really are so good, they should almost be illegal.
They even serve absinthe here, for those who are.
There are typically over 50 cocktails you can try at any given time, so you'll definitely find something you'll like.
Volstead is open Wednesday - Sunday, although hours vary.
On Wednesday - Friday, they're open from 4 p.m. - midnight. Saturday hours are 2 p.m. - midnight, and on Sundays, you can be there from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Don't pass up the chance to try this charming speakeasy the next time you're visiting Sandusky. It will make your day.
