Whirl-a-whips are all but a thing of the past. These special ice cream machines were part of many soda fountains and shops back in the day, but as those died out, so did the Whirl-a-whip. Luckily for North Dakotans, there is still one left - and it's one of the last remaining, still-operating machines of its kind in the world. Grab one of these historic and iconic treats at this small town drug store for yourself:
If you happen to be visiting Stanley, North Dakota, you don't want to leave until you've stopped by the Dakota Drug Co., a local spot that's been around for over a hundred years.
The Dakota Drug Co. seems like any other small-town drug store. With a typical pharmacy and shopping section, you may be surprised to find there is something else here that sets it apart.
Located inside the store among the aisles is an old fashioned soda fountain, known simply as The Fountain. It's here that one of the last, still-operating Whirl-a-whip machines in the world still creates delicious ice cream treats.
If you don't know what a Whirl-a-whip is, it is ice cream blended with your choice of mix-ins. Unlike fast-food joints with similar concepts that use soft serve, the Whirl-a-whip uses quality ice cream and blends it to a smooth consistency.
They have an immense list of mix-ins, from different types of well-loved cereal brands, candy, cookies, and fruits, to weirder things like bacon or even dill pickles.
After enjoying this classic dessert, you can even get a t-shirt commemorating this day saying you had a true Whirl-a-whip in Stanley, North Dakota. It's a nostalgic experience in a place you'd least expect it, and it's a true hidden gem of North Dakota.
The Fountain, located inside the Dakota Drug Co., is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Mondays through Fridays, and from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM on Saturdays. Visit their Facebook page for more information.
